An innovative practical lesson plan designed to introduce young people to some of the different ways to explore who we are, gently deconstructing unhelpful contemporary ideas, and encouraging a playful exploration of the colourful nuances of personality, narrative, roles and persona.
This introductory lesson explores identity through observation, discussion, and reflection, helping students recognise the many influences that contribute to the stories they tell about themselves and others. Based on the Identity chapter of Psynapp, it forms part of IMCE’s developing programme of educational resources for Experience Studies.

Identity has never been shaped in isolation. Family, friends, culture, education, and life experience all contribute to our sense of self. Today, digital and AI systems have become part of that process, making it increasingly important that young people understand not only who they are, but how identity itself is formed.
Experience Studies is an evolving educational field, and thoughtful feedback helps us continue to improve both the framework and the way it is presented. If you have comments, questions, or suggestions after reading the chapter, we’d be delighted to hear from you.
