The Institute for Metacognitive Education

Preparing Minds for the
Age of Intelligence

For most of our history, the human mind has evolved under natural pressures. Today, technology is drastically reshaping the conditions under which the human mind develops. IMCE explores how education must evolve in response.

A Missing Layer at the Heart of Modern Education

As machines become capable of ever subtler prediction & influence, understanding how our own experience is formed becomes essential to contemporary education. Experience Studies develops students’ capacity to navigate the forces shaping their minds, preserving self-direction, authenticity & depth of experience.

Understanding the Mind in a Changing World

Experience Studies is an emerging field exploring the architecture of human experience, how our minds are shaped, and where greater awareness and agency become possible. IMCE is helping establish the field through Metacognitive Education, research, tools & practice.

Safeguarding Human Agency & Depth of Experience

We look at how increasingly intelligent environments are reshaping human development, from attention and identity to creativity, judgement and relationships. Our research explores these emerging pressures, the human capacities most affected, and the potential for Metacognitive Education to provide a meaningful response.

Mapping the Emerging Pressures Shaping Our Minds

From attention capture & cognitive outsourcing to synthetic influence & psychological profiling, new pressures are reshaping the conditions under which our minds develop. IMCE maps these interconnected forces to better understand their effects on human development, & design effective educational responses.

Build, Test, Share, Repeat: Research Through Practice

Turning research into shared understanding and practical action is central to our work. We are developing a growing collection of articles, guides, educational materials & tools with a common purpose: to protect agency, raise awareness, improve digital hygiene, and better understand how experience is formed.

Imagining Human-Scale Support Infrastructures

We explore how mapping human experience can underpin human-scale support services, from individual learning to psychologically safe well-being agents to private school & community networks, widening access to human support while encouraging real relationships, non-mediated experience & collective participation.

Building Experience Studies

At the centre of IMCE’s work is a living, integrated framework for Experience Studies, developed and continually refined through research, design & practice. It maps human experience across interconnected dimensions, from the Body-Mind, cognitive & emotional to the imaginal, energetic, conditioned & scripted, providing a shared architecture through which ideas can be explored, applied, tested and developed.

Experience Studies 1

Our first framework for Experience Studies, Psynapp outlines an integrated model of human experience, exploring how attention, perception, emotion, thought, identity & influence come together to shape our perception.Through practical exploration, it develops greater awareness of these processes & our capacity to navigate them with coherence & self-direction.
