Mapping Fields of Influence
From our earliest experiences, we are shaped by the world, our families and friendships, the language and culture we inherit, the places we live, and increasingly, the technologies through which we encounter the world.
What Shapes Human Experience?
Body, environment, relationships, language, culture, institutions & technology all participate in the conditions through which we encounter the world. These influences do not act separately, but overlap and interact, shaping what receives our attention, how we interpret experience, what we value, and ultimately how we think, and who we become..
Influence is therefore not something that occasionally acts upon an otherwise independent mind. It is part of the environment in which minds develop.
Nested Fields of Influence
Each new field adds to rather than replaces what came before. We remain embodied, cultural beings living within designed environments, while increasingly encountering the world through computational systems that can select what we see, respond to how we behave, and generate new representations specifically for us.
These conditions do not replace one another, but accumulate. We remain embodied beings, shaped by culture and designed environments, while increasingly encountering the world through computational systems that can select what we see, learn from how we respond, and generate new representations specifically for us.
The New Architecture of Influence
For most of human history, human development was defined by a single reality: we had to adapt ourselves to the world. We developed our identities, resilience, and understanding of others by encountering an environment that was indifferent to our preferences. We grew by navigating its friction. Today, that developmental environment has fundamentally inverted. We are raising a generation in a world that is designed to adapt to them.
The digital systems mediating our lives have rapidly evolved through four stages:
- Select for Us – Curating Choices
- Learn from Us – Tracking Behaviour
- Adapt to Us – Mirroring our Preferences
- Generate Specifically for Us – Creating Bespoke Synthetic Realities
Influence has become intimate. This is an unprecedented change in the pressures on human development. These systems no longer sit passively on a desk; they sit between us and our information, our culture, our relationships, and increasingly, our own thinking. When the environment seamlessly anticipates and generates our desires, influence stops being something we can easily observe or resist. It becomes responsive, invisible, and deeply interwoven with human experience itself.
Influence is becoming increasingly intimate, responsive & interwoven with experience itself.
