Human Interest Non-Profit

IMCE exists to serve the public interest. Our governance is designed to protect the independence, transparency, and integrity needed to research and develop educational responses to the psychological challenges of the Age of Intelligence.

IMCE Ltd

IMCE was established to operate independently in the public interest. Our aim is to become a trusted centre for research, education, and public dialogue around human development, guided by evidence, transparency, and the protection of human agency.

Why a Non-Profit?

We believe preparing the human mind for the Age of Intelligence is a public responsibility, not simply a commercial opportunity. The knowledge, educational frameworks, and practical tools needed to meet this challenge should be developed in the public interest and made as widely accessible as possible.

Our aim is to create resources that parents can use, teachers can adapt, schools can implement, researchers can challenge, and young people can benefit from. We measure success not by financial return, but by usefulness, reach, trust, and long-term impact.

Institutional Principles

These principles define the standards by which IMCE operates. They protect the Institute’s public purpose, shape the choices we make, and provide a clear test for the work we undertake and the partnerships we form.

Public Interest First. Our work is guided by public benefit, with particular concern for young people, families, schools, communities, and future generations.

Independence. Our mission, research priorities, and public recommendations must remain free from commercial, political, or ideological capture.

Human Agency. Every tool, partnership, and recommendation should strengthen awareness, discernment, self-direction, and meaningful choice.

Evidence & Learning. Our work is research-informed, practice-led, and continually improved through testing, feedback, evidence, and responsible revision.

Privacy & Non-Extraction. The inner life of the human being should not become a resource for extraction. Tools and delivery channels should avoid manipulative engagement models.

Leadership

IMCE is currently led by its founder and director, James Engwell. As the Institute develops, we intend to expand its leadership, governance, advisory network, and partnerships.

James Engwell, IMCE Director

James is a designer, researcher, and educator whose work sits at the intersection of psychology, philosophy, technology, education, and human flourishment.

Over more than two decades, he has led human-centred design, innovation, and technology projects across the public and private sectors. Alongside this work, he has undertaken a long-term practical exploration of the mind through psychology, philosophy, contemplative traditions, and Body-Mind practice, including extended periods of study in India.

These two strands of work, human-centred design and the practical exploration of the mind, came together in the development of Psynapp. As advances in AI accelerated, that work expanded into the creation of the Institute for Metacognitive Education: a public-interest initiative dedicated to preparing minds for the Age of Intelligence.

Looking Ahead

As IMCE grows, we intend to expand our governance through an independent board, interdisciplinary advisors, research partnerships, and, where appropriate, charitable status. Our aim is to build an institution that remains transparent, accountable, independent, and firmly committed to the public interest.
