When systems increasingly perform the thinking, remembering and formulation we once had to do ourselves, effort falls — but so can the capacities that effort helped develop.

Cognitive Outsourcing is the transfer of thinking tasks to external systems. Humans have always extended cognition through language, tools and other people; the issue arises when assistance removes the very cognitive friction through which understanding, judgement, memory, imagination and problem-solving capability are developed or maintained.
Generative systems accelerate this shift because they can produce finished thought-like outputs rather than merely retrieve information. The immediate gain is less effort. The longer-term question is whether repeated substitution reduces confidence, endurance and skill in the underlying human process.
The developmental concern is whether important cognitive capacities receive enough use while they are still forming, not simply whether a young person becomes dependent on a tool.

If AI is used more selectively, it can extend thought without replacing the developmental work of thinking. People attempt, formulate and reason first, then use systems to challenge, compare, expand or refine.
As expectations adapt, education and work may increasingly judge only the quality of finished outputs. This risks creating a gap between apparent performance and actual understanding, with people becoming highly capable at obtaining answers while less practised at building the cognition that makes those answers meaningful.
Education and workplaces can support this by distinguishing assistance from substitution and preserving cognitive friction where it develops capability. The outcome is not less technology, but a clearer division of labour between what machines can do efficiently and what humans still need to practise themselves.
Use a simple ‘first attempt’ rule for important cognitive work: recall before searching, draft before generating, reason before asking for an answer, and form a view before requesting a summary. Use AI afterwards to compare, challenge, extend or refine.
For learning, deliberately preserve tasks that require memory, formulation and problem-solving without assistance. The point is not purity, but keeping the underlying capacities in regular use.
Make the division of labour visible. Retain regular periods of unaided reading, remembering, drafting, discussion and problem-solving, especially where these activities are part of learning or skill formation.
The metacognitive question is simple: what is this tool doing for me, and what might I stop doing as a result? The distinction is between ease that releases human capacity and ease that substitutes for it.
