Our research programme explores four interconnected areas shaping the future of human development, educational practice, and the relationship between young people and increasingly intelligent technologies.

1. Human Adaptation & Metacognitive Readiness

This programme explores how young people adapt to increasingly intelligent environments, and whether they can recognise the developmental pressures acting upon attention, judgement, emotion, identity and behaviour. It examines Metacognitive Readiness: the capacity to notice these influences, understand their effects, and respond consciously while retaining greater clarity, discernment and self-direction.

To what extent can young people recognise when persuasive systems are shaping their attention, judgement, emotion or behaviour, and can Metacognitive Education strengthen this capacity?

2. Identity & Self-Narrative

Identity develops through experience, relationships, social feedback and the stories we construct about ourselves. Young people already navigate powerful pressures around belonging, appearance, status, achievement and validation. Increasingly, intelligent systems participate directly in these processes, shaping self-understanding, influencing emotional development, and contributing to the narratives through which identity is formed.

This programme explores how these new forms of participation may influence identity, relationships, emotional development and the sense of authorship over one’s own life. It also investigates whether Metacognitive Education can help young people recognise these influences, develop a more resilient and adaptable sense of self, and strengthen independent judgement and self-direction.

3. Creativity, Expression & Meaning

Creativity is far more than the production of content. It is one of the primary ways we explore ourselves, make sense of experience, solve problems and participate in culture. As generative content grows at an unprecedented rate, the concern is not only what these systems can produce, but what may be displaced when young people rely on them too readily: curiosity, experimentation, original effort, and the sense of meaning that comes from making something oneself. This programme explores how AI can support creative development without substituting for the human processes through which imagination, expression, confidence and authorship grow.

4. Synthetic Relationships & Human Development

Synthetic personalities are quickly turning from novelty to infrastructure, with systems beginning to take on roles as companions, tutors, coaches, advisers and guides. Before long they will play an active role in human development alongside parents, teachers and friends. The central question is how synthetic relationships can provide benefit without displacing the human relationships and responsibilities on which healthy growth depends.

This programme explores the conditions under which synthetic personalities can provide meaningful support without encouraging dependency, confusing the nature of the relationship, or displacing human connection and expertise. It seeks to establish practical principles for psychologically safe design that protect attention, judgement and identity, support healthy development and real-world participation, and ensure that these systems remain transparently non-human tools rather than substitutes for people.
