Addressing the Research Gap

Young people are growing up in rapidly changing environments shaped by attention capture, cognitive outsourcing, synthetic influence and increasingly intelligent systems. These conditions affect how identity develops, how judgement is formed, how emotion is regulated, and how people understand their relationship with themselves and the world. Most importantly, they place serious pressure on independent judgement and self-direction.

While a growing body of research examines these emerging risks, far less attention has been given to understanding them as interconnected developmental pressures, or to how education might strengthen the human capacities most affected by them. IMCE’s research programme addresses this gap by developing Experience Studies and evaluating practical approaches to Metacognitive Education. Our aim is to build evidence-informed frameworks that strengthen awareness, discernment and agency across the many layers through which human development unfolds.

Our programme focuses on six interconnected areas of research, each examining a different aspect of human development under conditions of increasing mediation:

Research Through Educational Practice

Rather than separating research from educational practice, we look to bring them together: developing educational frameworks, applying them in real-world settings, evaluating their impact, and refining them through evidence-informed design.

This iterative process sits at the heart of our methodology; build, test, learn, improve. Every workshop, classroom resource, pilot programme and educational tool becomes an opportunity to examine how emerging developmental pressures affect young people, which human capacities become most important in response, and how those capacities can be strengthened through education. We seek to build the evidence needed to guide educational practice, support schools, inform policy, and strengthen the case for Metacognitive Education as a core component of modern education.

Metacognitive Education draws upon decades of established research into metacognition, attention, self-awareness, emotional regulation, reflective practice and learning. What remains comparatively underdeveloped is the translation of these established principles into coherent educational frameworks designed for the conditions young people now face. By designing, implementing and evaluating practical applications of metacognitive tools, IMCE seeks to understand what works, why it works, for whom, and under which conditions.

Interdisciplinary Research

The developmental pressures emerging in the Age of Intelligence do not belong to any single discipline. They arise across education, psychology, cognitive science, child development, artificial intelligence, design, ethics, culture, technology and public policy. Understanding them, and responding to them effectively, requires these perspectives to work together.

IMCE brings these fields together around a central educational question: which human capacities become most important as the conditions in which people grow, learn and think continue to change? By connecting interdisciplinary research with practical educational implementation, we aim to develop educational responses that are both intellectually rigorous and genuinely useful.

This work cannot be undertaken in isolation. We actively seek collaboration with researchers, universities, schools, teachers, funders, youth organisations, policymakers and public-interest technology partners. We particularly welcome partnerships that can help investigate emerging developmental pressures, design and evaluate educational frameworks, support pilot programmes, secure research funding, and build the evidence needed for wider educational adoption.
